From DACA to Permanent Residency: The Path to Certainty

In this episode, we speak with Rogelia García, who arrived in the United States at age 10 from Guadalajara, Mexico, due to a family emergency. What began as a temporary stay to care for her mother’s health turned into a lifetime of struggle, dreams, and, ultimately, success in her immigration journey.

De DACA a la Residencia Permanente: El camino hacia la certidumbre

Rogelia shares what it was like growing up in a new country without speaking the language and facing the uncertainty of being undocumented. However, her life took a significant turn with the arrival of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). This protection did more than just provide the peace of mind to work legally in banks and corporate offices; it opened the doors to a rising professional career.

" DACA changed my life because it opens doors to opportunities you didn't have before... banks, corporate offices, all of that allows you to move forward." [09:11]

The Power of Family Unity: The Process with a Veteran Spouse

While Rogelia already had DACA, her major step toward Lawful Permanent Residence (Green Card) came through her husband, a U.S. Army veteran. Thanks to her spouse's military status, Rogelia was able to benefit from processes that facilitated her Adjustment of Status without having to leave the country to receive a waiver.

This chapter highlights the importance of understanding the special protections available to military families and how these can accelerate and secure a legal pathway.

A Message of Bravery for the Community

Today, Rogelia is just one step away from being able to travel outside the country for the first time in decades, without the fear of being unable to return. Her message to other "Dreamers" and families in similar situations is clear: do not live in fear.

"¿Are we going to live in fear for the rest of our lives, or are we going to seize the opportunity we have? It’s better to file the paperwork and hope for the best." [21:05]
