Success Stories: Chapter 8 of Archivos de Inmigrantes

In this episode, we speak with Mr. Marco, who emigrated from Guatemala at the age of 17, fleeing poverty and seeking the future his uncle had inspired him to pursue. His story is a sincere testimony of how misconceptions about costs and fear of the legal process can delay the well-being of an entire family.
For years, he postponed his adjustment of status because outsiders insisted that the process cost more than $12,000 in a single payment. Lacking that sum, he chose to live in the shadows. However, his perspective changed when he discovered that with the right guidance, he could access flexible payment plans that fit his financial situation.
"People told me it was a lot of money and I didn't have it... but when I came here, they gave me payment options. If I had more, I paid more; if I had less, I paid less. That is how I finally felt encouraged to take the leap". [28:51]
The Ultimate Test: The Waiver and the Consular Departure
Since Marco entered the country without inspection, his path to residency required the approval of a provisional unlawful presence waiver (I-601A) and an appointment at the consulate in Guatemala. The fear of leaving and not being able to return was his greatest emotional obstacle. After years of waiting, he finally traveled for his interview, facing his fears head-on.
The Biggest Mistake: Not Starting Sooner
Upon returning to the United States as a legal resident, Marco experienced an indescribable sense of relief. His entry through the airport was simple, quick, and respectful, debunking many of the fears that circulate on social media.
"Now I regret not having done it sooner. If I had gotten married and started the process a long time ago, I would have had my papers for many years by now". [33:57]
