The Price of Emigration: The Story of Jesús Gregorio Vázquez Bueno

When Jesús Gregorio Vázquez Bueno arrived at the studio to record his interview for Archivos de Inmigrantes, he did so with a calm, relaxed, and very friendly demeanor. From the very beginning, he was open to sharing his story—a conversation marked by memories, sacrifices, and decisions that many immigrants know all too well.

During the interview, Jesús Gregorio spoke about his immigration journey in the United States, a process that took time and involved one of the most difficult steps in the system: applying for an immigration waiver. While his wife’s process was more straightforward—since she had entered the country on a tourist visa—his required patience, preparation, and the hope that everything would turn out well after so many years.

One of the most tense moments in his story occurred during the immigration medical exam he was required to undergo. After having had COVID, the doctors detected spots on his lungs, and at first, they suspected it might be tuberculosis. Fortunately, further tests confirmed that it wasn’t, but that moment marked another period of uncertainty in a process that had already been a long one.

However, the most emotional part of his story is tied to the true cost of emigrating: being separated from his family. Like many immigrants, Jesús Gregorio had to face the pain of not being able to say goodbye to his parents when they passed away—an experience that deeply affects those who live far from their homeland and the people they love.

Today, after going through all that, Jesús Gregorio and his wife have finally obtained their permanent residency. Their story reflects the challenges, the moments of uncertainty, and also the resilience that many people demonstrate during the U.S. immigration process as they build their new lives.
